Why Locals Love Malatang
Nestled in the heart of Auckland Central, Malatang offers an authentic and vibrant taste of Chinese cuisine, specializing in the beloved spicy hotpot tradition. Located conveniently at 17/350 Queen Street, this bustling eatery is a haven for anyone craving the warmth of a rich, flavorful broth combined with the excitement of customized ingredients.
Malatang's menu is a feast for the senses, presenting two delectable soup bases—tomato and beef—each bursting with depth and richness that instantly comforts and invigorates. Diners can choose from an impressive array of over 80 fresh ingredients, including various meats like tender beef, lamb, pork, and delightful options like beef marrow, as well as an abundance of vegetables, tofu, and fresh noodles. The unique ordering system, where all items are priced equally based on weight, encourages creativity and ensures you pay only for what you truly want to enjoy.
The moment your steaming bowl arrives, you’re greeted by the enticing aroma of the rich beef bone broth or the tangy notes of the tomato base, each infused with spices that can be adjusted to your desired heat level. However, a word of advice from patrons: if labeled spicy, it truly means it—so beginners might want to start mild and build up. The broth’s silky texture and the perfectly cooked ingredients meld into an irresistible combination that warms you from the inside out, especially on chilly Auckland days.
The atmosphere inside Malatang is cozy and lively, with a friendly and attentive staff that elevates the dining experience. Customers rave about the thoughtfulness of service, particularly mentioning staff members like Cooper, who go out of their way to explain menu options and assist with take-away orders, making every visit feel personalized and welcoming.
Frequent diners have shared their enthusiasm: one describes it as “pure happiness” to indulge in a bowl of this spicy delight during colder weather, while another praises the restaurant for taking good care of customers even with chili allergies by advising on spice levels. The 20% discount running until the end of May is a fantastic opportunity to explore Malatang’s diverse offerings without hesitation.
Whether you’re a solo diner seeking a quick yet sumptuous meal or gathering with friends to share a flavorful adventure, Malatang promises an immersive experience that satisfies both the palate and the soul. Its harmonious blend of rich broths, fresh ingredients, and genuine hospitality makes it a standout gem in Auckland’s culinary scene—one that beckons you to return again and again.
For those who love bold flavors and authentic Chinese hotpot culture, Malatang is truly worth discovering.

They offer 2 soups (tomato and beef) and dry mala selection with many option of meats and veggies. Same price for all food and charged based on their weight. I ordered beef soup and it was really delicious. The broth was very rich. Just be aware of the spiciness level. They have 20% discount until end of May. Worth to try!!

Good place if you are craving hotpot, even alone. They weigh everything (meat/seafood/veg) all the same price. You choose your broth and level of spiciness. They cooked it inside, and you'll have a freshly prepared bowl of hotpot. You pay what you want. Great idea to avoid wastage. (Btw, if they say it is spicy..it is really spicy!!!!) choose mild and add spice to your liking

The options to select from were a large variety; chicken, pork, beef, lamb. And a lot of vegetables, tofu options, different ramen choices, and fresh noodles options. The server Cooper was very considerate and friendly! He told us what each of the options were and assisted in providing us take away bowls and bags. The spice level was good and the side options made me so happy to see; garlic oil, chili paste etc. with cute cutlery spoons and bowls. Since the price is determined by weight, it did come to nearly NZD 30 but I could take a lot of meat and veggie options, and I have leftovers for dinner too! Definitely coming back!

The soup was incredible and the service from the girl was super friendly. I’d just like to add a little suggestion, piece of advice, or urgent request: labeling the ingredients would really help those of us who aren’t familiar with this type of food, it would make things much easier and allow us to add more to our bowl! We’re vegetarian, so we only picked things we recognized: tofu, broccoli, mushrooms… but I honestly would’ve tried all the options suitable for my diet if they had been labeled. I hope to come back soon and fully enjoy some beautifully labeled ingredients

I have eaten here many times, and the food is absolutely delicious! The only problem is that everything is soaked in water to increase the weight, and they charge $50 per kilogram. That’s quite expensive, and you will easily spend $30+ for a medium portion of the meal.
